The portal is provideraccess.dentaquest.com. Virginia carves its entire Medicaid dental benefit out to a single administrator — DentaQuest — statewide, for adults and children alike, under the programme now called Cardinal Care Smiles. The state's own provider site, vamedicaid.dmas.virginia.gov, is for enrolment only. It will not answer an eligibility question and it is not where the dental claim goes.
A Virginia office has never used a state portal for dental
This is the fact that saves the phone call. In most states the sequence is: read the patient's card, find that plan's dental administrator, then find the login. In Virginia there is only one administrator and it does not vary. The managed-care plan printed on the card does not route the dental benefit anywhere, and neither does the patient's age — a single carve-out covers the lot.
So the failure mode here is not picking the wrong plan. It is starting at the state site, finding a system that handles provider enrolment and revalidation rather than dental eligibility, and concluding that the coverage cannot be verified or that the portal is broken. It is neither. The enrolment system is doing exactly its job; the dental question is simply behind a different door.
The programme changed its name, and the old one is what people search
Cardinal Care Smiles was previously Smiles For Children. Both names still circulate — in referral letters, in colleagues' notes, in whatever the last biller wrote in the chart. They are the same programme, and neither name changes where you log in.
Treat a "Smiles For Children" reference as current information filed under an old label rather than as a separate benefit you have not found yet. If somebody is looking for a Smiles For Children portal distinct from the Cardinal Care Smiles one, there is nothing to find.

The check was a Domain Name System lookup on 10 September 2026. provideraccess.dentaquest.com resolved through an Akamai chain to two addresses (23.48.165.26 and 23.48.165.6). vamedicaid.dmas.virginia.gov returned a single address (169.48.37.225). That is what we verified and the limit of it: we did not sign in, and we make no claim about whether either was reachable from a given network at a given moment.
What to do
- Bookmark provideraccess.dentaquest.com for every Virginia Medicaid dental patient, adult or child.
- Ignore the managed-care plan on the card for dental purposes. It does not change the administrator.
- Use vamedicaid.dmas.virginia.gov only for enrolment and revalidation, and do not read its silence on dental as a coverage problem.
- Record "DentaQuest statewide" against Virginia in the practice management system, so the next person does not go looking for a plan-specific route that does not exist.
- Treat "Smiles For Children" and "Cardinal Care Smiles" as one programme when you meet the older name in a chart or a referral.
