How do I log in to Medi-Cal Dental as a provider in California?

Medi-Cal Dental is state fee-for-service with no benefit manager — the login is provider-portal.apps.prd.cammis.medi-cal.ca.gov, and the shorter names an office would guess at do not resolve.

The portal is provider-portal.apps.prd.cammis.medi-cal.ca.gov, and Medi-Cal Dental is state fee-for-service — there is no benefit manager sitting between the practice and the programme. No DentaQuest, no LIBERTY, no SKYGEN, no per-plan dental subcontractor to work out first. California is one of the simple states, and the honest version of this article is short.

The one thing that is not simple is the address

That hostname is five labels deep and every one of them is load-bearing. On 10 September 2026 we put each shortened form of it through a Domain Name System lookup, which is the step that turns a hostname into an address a browser can reach. The results:

  • provider-portal.apps.prd.cammis.medi-cal.ca.gov — resolved.
  • cammis.medi-cal.ca.gov — no address record. The zone exists; it simply has no address for a browser to go to.
  • denti-cal.ca.gov — no address record. www.denti-cal.ca.gov, with the www on the front, did resolve.
  • medi-cal.ca.gov and dhcs.ca.gov — both resolved.

That is worth a minute of your day because of how the failure looks. A name with no address record does not redirect you anywhere and does not show you a maintenance page. The browser fails before it reaches any server, with a message about not finding the site — which reads exactly like the portal being down, and is not that at all. An office that trims the address to something it can remember, or drops a www, gets a screen that looks like an outage.

We checked DNS and nothing further. We did not sign in, and we make no claim about whether the portal was reachable from any particular network — several government portals refuse traffic that does not come from an ordinary practice connection, so a failure from somewhere else proves nothing either way.

What to do

  • Bookmark the full hostname and reach the portal from the bookmark. Typing it is where this goes wrong; five labels is more than anybody recalls correctly under pressure.
  • Treat "this site can't be reached" on a shortened address as your own typo, not an outage. Before you ring anybody, paste the full string from the bookmark and try again.
  • Do not go looking for a dental benefit manager for a Medi-Cal patient. There is not one. If a colleague or a vendor list sends you to a benefit manager's provider portal for California, that is a dead end rather than a door you have failed to find.
  • Write "fee-for-service, no benefit manager" against California in the practice management system, next to the full hostname. The absence of a manager is the fact people keep re-deriving, and the address is the thing people keep mistyping.

The state-by-state directory gives the same answer for 48 states and the District of Columbia, every hostname re-checked on the same date — and most of those states do have a benefit manager, which is why the reflex to hunt for one is so strong here.

Portal address and administration last re-checked 10 September 2026.
