Iowa dental — the Dental Wellness Plan and Hawki, the state's children's programme — runs through two carriers as of 1 July 2026: Delta Dental of Iowa at secure.deltadentalia.com, and DentaQuest at providers.dentaquest.com. Which of the two you use is a property of the patient's coverage, not of the state, so there is no single Iowa answer to memorise. What there is, is a date.
The contract that ended is the one that will cost you a morning
MCNA's Iowa contract ended. Delta Dental of Iowa and DentaQuest replaced it from 1 July 2026. That is the whole of the change, and it is the fact an office cannot work out by looking — because nothing about a retired contract looks retired from the outside.
We checked. On 10 September 2026, portal.mcna.net still resolved in DNS, through an Amazon load balancer to three addresses. A hostname that has been taken out of a state's dental programme does not stop existing. The name stays in DNS, so a bookmark saved in Iowa in June still points at a host that is there, and nothing in the address bar tells you the Iowa contract behind it has ended. The failure arrives later and in the wrong shape — as an eligibility answer that does not match, or a claim that goes nowhere — long after the person who typed the address has moved on to the next patient.
This is the opposite of a dead-hostname failure, and it is worse. A hostname that has been switched off fails immediately, loudly, in the browser, and you go looking for the new one that afternoon. A hostname that has merely lost this state's contract fails quietly and much later.
What the DNS lookups actually showed
Every hostname was put through a Domain Name System lookup on 10 September 2026. That is what was verified and the limit of it: no sign-in was attempted, and no claim is made that any of these sites was reachable from a particular office network. Portals routinely refuse traffic that does not look like an ordinary browser, so a connection that fails from elsewhere says nothing about the portal.
- secure.deltadentalia.com resolved to four addresses. The bare deltadentalia.com resolved to the same four, so the two names sit on the same infrastructure — but type the
secure.name, because that is the one the programme publishes. - providers.dentaquest.com resolved through an Akamai chain to two addresses. Note the word:
providers, plural. DentaQuest also publishesprovideraccess.dentaquest.com, which resolves to a completely different pair of addresses, and other states use that one. Iowa's isproviders. - portal.mcna.net resolved, as above. Resolving is not the same as being your payer.

What to do
- Delete the MCNA bookmark for Iowa patients. It still opens. That is the problem, not the exception.
- Ask which of the two carriers holds the patient's dental before you verify — the Dental Wellness Plan and Hawki both route by carrier now.
- Check the DentaQuest hostname character by character.
providers.dentaquest.comandprovideraccess.dentaquest.comare different systems, and a colleague in another state will hand you the wrong one in good faith. - Write "two carriers since 1 July 2026" against Iowa in your practice management system, so the next person does not re-derive it from a stale note.
- Re-check anything last verified before July 2026. A verification taken under the old contract was taken from the wrong payer.
