The portal is medicaid.alabamaservices.org. Alabama Medicaid dental is fee-for-service, administered by Gainwell, with no dental benefit manager in between — so there is one place to verify eligibility and one place to bill, and the patient's paperwork does not send you somewhere else.
The old address does not redirect. It fails.
The address many offices still have bookmarked, interactive.medicaid.alabama.gov, has no DNS record at all. We checked on 10 September 2026 and it returns nothing — not a redirect to the current portal, not a holding page, nothing.
That distinction matters more than it sounds. A retired address that redirects is a mild inconvenience: you land somewhere and re-bookmark. An address with no DNS record produces a browser error, which reads to most people as "the internet is broken" or "the portal is down" rather than "this address is retired". Offices lose real time to that, and some conclude the Alabama portal has an outage when it does not.
If your bookmark or your written procedure still says interactive.medicaid.alabama.gov, that is the whole problem, and replacing the bookmark is the whole fix.

Both hostnames were put through a Domain Name System lookup on 10 September 2026. The first resolves; the second returns no address record. That lookup is what we verified and the limit of it — we did not attempt to sign in, and a portal refusing traffic from outside a practice network would tell us nothing either way.
Note the shape of the working address: it ends in alabamaservices.org, not alabama.gov. That is genuinely counter-intuitive for a state programme, and it is why the retired .gov address stays in people's heads. It is also why an office reaching for "the Alabama Medicaid site" from a search result rather than a bookmark can end up somewhere that merely looks official.
What to do
- Replace any bookmark or written procedure that says
interactive.medicaid.alabama.govwith medicaid.alabamaservices.org. - If someone reports the Alabama portal is down and they reached it from an old bookmark, check the address before you check the portal — a browser error here usually means the retired hostname, not an outage.
- There is no dental benefit manager to route around: verify and bill the programme directly.
- Put the address in the practice management system rather than in a browser bookmark on one workstation, so a new starter inherits it.
The state-by-state directory gives the same answer for 48 states and the District of Columbia, each hostname re-checked on the same date. Two states, Alaska and Georgia, are deliberately absent rather than guessed.
