# How do I verify dental eligibility with Meritain Health?

> Register your office at account.meritain.com with your tax ID and NPI. The portal shows eligibility and benefits, accumulators, plan documents and a copy of the patient's ID card. The 24-hour automated benefits and claims line is 1.800.566.9311. There is no single Meritain benefit design — the terms belong to the employer's plan.

Meritain Health administers employer benefit plans rather than selling one of its own, which
changes the question you are asking when you verify. There is no "Meritain frequency" or
"Meritain downgrade rule" to learn once and reuse: the frequencies, the maximum, the
waiting periods and the coinsurance all belong to the employer's plan document, and Meritain
is the party that reads it and pays. As of September 2026 its own provider page describes the
portal in one sentence — "Your online Meritain Health provider portal gives you instant, online access to
patient eligibility, claims information, forms and more" ([*Meritain Health — Resources for
providers*](https://www.meritain.com/resources-for-providers-meritain-health-provider-portal/),
2026) — and the portal is where the per-plan answers live.

Kaylie has not measured Meritain eligibility responses and will not print a number we did not
measure. What follows is what Meritain publishes for providers, and what it means at the
front desk.

## Where you check, and what you need to register

The provider portal is at [account.meritain.com](https://account.meritain.com/), with
registration at [account.meritain.com/portal/registration](https://account.meritain.com/portal/registration).
Meritain's provider services page lists what registration asks for: your **tax ID**, your
**provider name and address as they appear on your W-9**, your **NPI** — the ten-digit
National Provider Identifier — and a phone number. The W-9 detail is the one that trips
registrations: the address has to match the W-9, not the office's current signage.

The same page publishes a **24-hour automated line for benefits and claims,
1.800.566.9311**, and otherwise points to the toll-free number on the back of the patient's
ID card. Read that card number rather than reusing a number from another Meritain patient:
Meritain administers many separate employer plans and the service line printed on the card
is the one routed to that plan.

## What the portal shows you

Meritain's provider services page lists what an approved account can see:

> "Claims history", "Explanation of Benefits", "Plan documents", "A copy of your patient's
> ID card", "Eligibility and benefits", "Accumulators".

— [*Meritain Health — Provider services*](https://www.meritain.com/about-us-self-funded-employee-benefit-plans/meritain-health-provider-services/),
2026

Two of those six matter more than the rest for dental.

**Plan documents.** Because the benefit is the employer's, the plan document is the primary
source for a frequency or a waiting period, and Meritain puts it in front of you rather than
making you ask. If a phone rep's answer and the plan document disagree, the document is what
gets paid.

**Accumulators.** This is the used-to-date figures — how much of the annual maximum and the
deductible the patient has already spent. It is the number that turns a coverage percentage
into a real estimate, and it is the one that moves between the day you verify and the day
you seat the patient.

**A copy of the patient's ID card** is unusual and worth using: it settles the group number
and the service line without asking the patient to dig out a card they do not have.

## The electronic route

Meritain lists its clearinghouse vendors publicly: **Availity**, **Optum (formerly Change
Healthcare)**, **Change Healthcare -Dental**, and **SSI (ClaimsNet)**. Three of the four —
Optum, Change Healthcare -Dental and SSI — are shown as carrying eligibility, claim status
inquiry and claims submission; **Availity is listed for claims submission only**, so an
office routing its eligibility checks through Availity will not get a Meritain answer back.
The eligibility transaction is the 270/271 pair, the electronic eligibility question and its
answer, the same transaction your practice management system fires when it checks a patient
in batch overnight. Meritain publishes a 270/271 companion guide and a separate dental claim
guide
([*Meritain Health — Electronic transaction
vendors*](https://www.meritain.com/about-us-self-funded-employee-benefit-plans/meritain-health-electronic-transaction-vendors/),
2026).

A 270/271 response is a good screen for *is this person covered today* and a poor one for
*what will this crown pay*. It rarely carries frequency history or a downgrade provision. Use
it to catch terminations before the appointment, then verify the specifics you are about to
quote.

## What Meritain withholds

Its public pages do not publish a dental payer ID, a dental claims mailing address, or a
dental-specific benefits phone number — those come off the card or out of the portal. Nor do
the public pages say whether a given employer's dental benefit is administered by Meritain at
all: employers routinely carve the dental benefit out to a separate dental administrator
while Meritain keeps the medical. A patient handing you a Meritain card is not proof that
Meritain pays their dental claim. The card's own dental section, or its absence, is.

Meritain's machine-readable file search returns a **separate file per group ID** rather than
one file for the company. That is the shape of the whole business in one screen: the terms
belong to the group.

## What to do

- Register the office once at account.meritain.com with the W-9 name and address, not the
  trading name.
- Before quoting, open the **plan document** in the portal for the provision you are about to
rely on, and read the **accumulators** the same day the patient is seated.
- Read the group number and the dental service number off the card — the portal's ID card
copy gives you both without the patient present.
- If the card shows no dental administrator, ask the patient who their dental coverage is
with before assuming it is Meritain.
- Use the electronic eligibility check to catch terminations, and a real verification for
anything you are about to put a dollar figure on.
